Experience in Jasper
Valley of Five Lakes Hike
The Valley of Five Lakes is one of Jasper National Park's signature day hikes — and for good reason. The 9.3km loop winds through ancient spruce and fir forest before opening onto a series of brilliantly coloured lakes, each a slightly different shade of jade, turquoise, or cerulean depending on the angle of light and time of day. The colours come from glacial rock flour suspended in the water, which scatters sunlight in ways that feel almost artificial. The trail is well-marked and gains minimal elevation, making it one of the most accessible yet rewarding hikes in the park. Wildlife sightings — elk, deer, and the occasional black bear — are common in the forested sections. Allow extra time to sit at the second or third lake, where the view of the surrounding peaks is best. Most hikers complete the loop in 2–3 hours; plan for 3–4 if you stop to photograph.
