Experience in Jasper
Maligne Canyon Ice Walk
In winter, Maligne Canyon transforms into something that defies easy description. The Maligne River, which flows through the canyon in summer, freezes in a series of cascades, pillars, and blue-green grottos that fill the 55-metre-deep slot with ice formations unlike anything in the accessible Canadian Rockies. A guided walk takes you down into the canyon on microspikes, past frozen waterfalls, into narrow sections where the ice walls close to within arm's reach on both sides, and into blue grottos where the canyon opens into cathedral-like chambers of ice. The guide knows where the most spectacular formations are each week; they change constantly as temperature fluctuates and can take you into sections of the canyon that self-guided visitors don't find. The walk ends with hot chocolate at the canyon rim. Temperature in the canyon sits 5–8°C colder than Jasper town; dress in proper layered winter gear.
