Experience in Jasper

Icefields Parkway Cycling

The Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular drives on earth — but cycling it is something else entirely. At 65km/h in a car, the scenery blurs. On a loaded touring bike, every waterfall, glacier tongue, and mountain wall reveals itself at the pace it deserves. The 230km route from Lake Louise to Jasper passes the Columbia Icefield, Athabasca Falls, Sunwapta Falls, and dozens of unnamed alpine lakes. The route climbs two significant passes — Bow Summit (2,069m) and Sunwapta Pass (2,035m) — both achievable by fit cyclists in good conditions. Backcountry campsites are spaced roughly 50–70km apart; book through Parks Canada months in advance. Most cyclists complete the route in 2–3 days. Traffic is heavy in July and August; early morning riding or a late-May / early-September trip significantly improves the experience.
