Experience in Hinton
Cardinal Divide Sunrise
Cardinal Divide sits at 2,060m on the boundary between the Rocky Mountain foothills and the main ranges — and the view from the top is genuinely staggering. To the west, the full sweep of the Rockies from Jasper south to the Brazeau River country. To the east, the rolling boreal foothills that stretch toward Edmonton. In between: alpine meadows, subalpine larch forests, and a silence broken only by wind and ptarmigan. The access road is rough (a 4WD or high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended for the final 15km), but once you arrive, the meadow walk to the true divide is only 2–3km each way with modest elevation gain. The sunrise experience is the reason most people make the effort: arrive before dawn, set up on the divide, and watch the light move west to east across both mountain ranges simultaneously. In late September, the larch trees turn gold and the meadows purple with autumn heather. This is one of those places that rewards the extra effort extravagantly.
